The UK tax office is preparing to send engagement letters next week to 12,000 businesses it believes don’t have a UK establishment for value-added tax.
His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs said it will use the information to inform online marketplaces they may need to start collecting VAT at the point of sale for businesses using online platforms.
“We’re doing this to ensure VAT records are up to date and the correct treatment of VAT is applied by online marketplaces facilitating the sales for overseas-based sellers,” an HMRC spokesperson said Friday.
