A money lender cannot change its value-added tax grouping to recover more than £2 million ($2.43 million) in overpaid taxes, the UK’s high court ruled.
The Upper Tribunal agreed with the lower court and tax office’s conclusions that Dollar Financial UK Ltd. did not have a valid application to backdate its VAT group registration and cannot get a refund on overpaid VAT.
The company asked the tax office in September 2016 to change the date its US parent company, Dollar Financial Group, joined its VAT Group from June 2013 to July 2012, with retrospective effect.
