The UK tax office collected £276 million ($352.68 million) from a plastic packaging tax in financial year 2022 to 2023, according to the office’s first statistics report about the measure, released on Thursday.
The tax applies to manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging components that contain less than 30% recycled plastic. It went into effect on April 1, 2022, and aimed to provide “a clear economic incentive to use recycled plastic in packaging and stimulate an uptake in recycling and collection of plastic waste,” according to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
