UK Tax Authority to Appeal VAT Ruling for Public EV Charging

The UK tax authority is appealing a court ruling that allowed reduced value-added tax rates for charging electric vehicles at public stations, HMRC said Tuesday.

Charging electric vehicles at public points, such as parking garages, should be subject to the standard VAT rate of 20%, rather than the 5% rate for domestic charging, according to a policy paper by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

The First-tier Tribunal had in a February ruling allowed Charge My Street Limited—operator of public EV charging points in the UK—to levy the reduced 5% VAT rate on electricity supplied at its public charging stations. ...
