UN Treaty Should Aim to Modernize Tax Systems, Nations Say

Countries urged the United Nations to use a new tax treaty to help close the gap in capabilities between tax authorities of developing and developed economies.

Many developing countries’ tax systems operate entirely manually, hindering enforcement because they can’t use tax data shared by other jurisdictions, Mathew Gbonjubola, Nigeria’s delegate and coordinating director in Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service, told a treaty committee negotiating Friday in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Quite a number of administrations are not able to utilize the data because they don’t have the tools to analyze and mine the data available to them,” Gbonjubola said.
