Upcoming Law ‘Existential Threat’ for UK Tax Agents, Group Warns

UK tax agents face an “existential threat” to their businesses under the government’s proposed tax agent registration regime, an accountancy organization said Tuesday.

The measures are too broadly drafted and risk increasing the cost and complexity of providing tax advice, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales told UK lawmakers, according to a statement.

Tax advisers interacting with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs on behalf of clients would be required to register with the tax authority from May 2026, according to the Finance Bill published earlier this month. HMRC would also gain enhanced powers from April 2026 ...
