Vietnamese environmental advocate Nguy Thi Khanh’s 24-month prison sentence for tax evasion is not tied to her climate change activities, Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said at a Hanoi press briefing.
The US, in a June 19 State Department Statement, said it was “deeply concerned” about Khanh’s sentencing and called for her release. Khanh was arrested in February, Tuoi Tre newspaper has reported.
Her supporters allege Khanh is being punished for her activism against the government’s coal policies, the New York Times reported.
