Virginia Amends Code to Extend Tax Relief for Federal Employees

The Virginia Governor signed a law that amends §58.1-3916 of the Code of Virginia, to allow local governing bodies to provide tax extensions for federal employees affected by government shutdowns. The law includes: 1) permitting localities to grant extensions on personal property taxes for both furloughed federal employees and essential employees who continue working without immediate payment during shutdowns; and 2) clarifying that any such extension must be requested by application from the federal employee and shall end no later than 90 days following the reopening of the federal government.
