The European Commission is considering proposing a windfall tax on energy profits, as oil and gas prices remain high due to the war in the Middle East, a top official said Thursday.
Valdis Dombrovskis, the EU economy chief, told the European Parliament that a windfall tax is “currently being assessed.”
“Several member states” have called on the commission to propose such a tax, Dombrovskis said. Those include Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and Portugal, Bloomberg previously reported.
Because national capitals hold more sway on tax policy than does Brussels, he noted, the commission is proceeding warily.
