Airbnb, Expedia Face Room Tax Collection Rule in West Virginia (1)

Airbnb Inc., Expedia Group Inc., Hotels.com LP, and other companies facilitating room rentals in West Virginia may soon be required to collect local room taxes on top of sales taxes.

The state Legislature is sending Gov. Jim Justice (R) a bill (S.B. 163) that would require vacation-rental marketplaces to collect local occupancy taxes from renters.

West Virginia enacted a marketplace facilitator law last year that requires collection and remission of sales taxes on behalf of vendors using their platforms. But it doesn’t apply to local occupancy taxes.
