Airbnb Inc. has filed a federal lawsuit against Boston’s new rules for regulating and taxing short-term rentals.
The company is asking a federal judge to issue an injunction to stave off Jan. 1, 2019, implementation of the rules, claiming they are an unconstitutional infringement on Airbnb’s free speech.
The Nov. 13 lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, claims the city’s ordinance is unconstitutional when it attempts to “conscript” home-sharing platforms like Airbnb into monitoring and policing posts on its website.
