Amazon Wants South Carolina Justices to Reverse Sales Tax Loss

Amazon Services LLC asked the South Carolina Supreme Court to free it from a $12.5 million tax bill for third party sales on the Amazon.com marketplace.

The e-commerce giant wants the high court to reverse a January appeals court ruling that it owes taxes on third-party marketplace sales for three months of 2016, before South Carolina passed a law imposing tax obligations on online marketplaces.

“The ruling of the Court of Appeals in this case significantly weakens a longstanding protection for taxpayers against the overzealous enforcement of the tax laws,” Amazon argued in a petition for review filed April 17. ...
