Arizona Tax Law Conformity Standoff Sows Filing-Season Confusion

Hundreds of thousands of Arizonans may have to file amended tax returns this year as state officials remain at odds over how much to conform with President Donald Trump’s signature tax law enacted last year.

A proposal advancing this week to fully conform with the federal law is an outcome that neither the Republican-controlled state legislature nor Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs want. But Republicans say it would be necessary to avert an election-year scenario where people with more complicated tax returns—about one-third of the state’s 3 million individual filers, according to revenue officials—could have to file amended returns.
