Budget Crunch Sends Colorado Legislature Back Into Session

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) Wednesday called lawmakers back to the state capitol for a special legislative session to address a $1.2 billion budget shortfall expected under President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending law.

Polis said the General Assembly has a duty to balance the budget for the current year in light of the “havoc” caused by Trump’s tax cuts, which will flow through to the state, and reductions to federal support for social safety net programs. The special session beginning Aug. 21also will address health care, food security, and artificial intelligence.
