Building Owners Seek to Block Vote on Chicago’s ‘Mansion Tax’

A coalition of Chicago building owners, contractors, and real estate investors filed a suit Friday, aiming to block a referendum vote on Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) plan for a new real estate transfer tax on high-end properties.

Led by the Building Owners and Managers Association, the coalition asked a Cook County Circuit Court judge for an injunction barring the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners from putting the proposal before voters on the primary election ballot March 19.
