California Bill Excludes Some Military Pay From State Income Tax

Military veterans and their surviving spouses wouldn’t pay state income tax on the first $20,000 of retirement pay under a bill the California Assembly passed on Thursday.

The bill (A.B. 53) by Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D) would end California’s status as the only state that fully taxes military retirement pay, according to a legislative staff analysis. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has asked lawmakers to enact a similar proposal as part of the budget plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
