Four bills offering property tax relief to victims of the January wildfires in Los Angeles made it halfway through the California Legislature ahead of a June 6 deadline.
The bills passed their houses of origin and now move to the opposite chamber, where they must pass by Sept. 12 to reach Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). They would mainly apply to victims of the Palisades and Eaton fires that ravaged Los Angeles in early January. By the time the fires were contained, they destroyed more than 16,000 structures, damaged 2,000 more, and killed 29 people.
