California Cities Must Disclose Retailer Payments in Tax Deals

A bill requiring California cities to disclose how much sales tax revenue they give to retailers in exchange for assigning online sales to their jurisdictions became law on Saturday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill (A.B. 2854), which applies to a few dozen cities that have agreements sending millions of dollars annually to some of the world’s largest retailers, including Apple Inc., Best Buy Co. Inc., and Walmart Inc. It takes effect Jan. 1, 2025.
