The California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced that employers in disaster-affected areas in the state can request an extension for up to two months to file their payroll reports or returns or make their payroll tax deposits without facing penalties or interest. Other services that may be requested include access to reconstruct lost payroll records, work-sharing programs as an alternative to layoffs, and clarification that qualified disaster relief payments are exempt from certain state payroll taxes.
