California FTB Issues Instructions for Form FTB 3853, Health Coverage Exemptions, Individual Shared Responsibility Penalty

The California Franchise Tax Board April 1 issued the 2020 instructions for Form FTB 3853, Health Coverage Exemptions and Individual Shared Responsibility Penalty, for individual income tax purposes. Beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2020, residents and their dependents must obtain and maintain minimum essential health care coverage. Individuals who fail to maintain qualifying coverage for any month during tax year 2020 are subject to a penalty unless they qualify for an exemption.
