California lawmakers cleared the way for San Francisco to ask voters to tax ride-sharing services such as Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc.
The Uber- and Lyft-backed bill (A.B. 1184) would allow San Francisco to place on the ballot a 3.25 percent tax on single transportation network company (TNC) riders and 1.5 percent on pooled rides within the city. The ballot measure, which would support transportation and infrastructure, would still need two-thirds voter approval, Sen. Scott Wiener (D) told senators during an Aug. 31 floor vote. Zero-emission vehicles could be subject to lower rates.
