California would have clear authority to revoke the nonprofit status of nonprofits that incite or participate in insurrections under a bill lawmakers sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday.
The bill (S.B. 834) is a response to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, said Sen. Scott Wiener (D). The Attorney General and Franchise Tax Board already have the authority to revoke tax-exempt status under common law, but he wants state statutes to say the same.
