California would be the first state to give union members a tax credit—rather than a tax deduction—for their dues under a proposal from Democratic leaders in the Legislature.
The Workers Fairness Tax Credit is part of a $235.5 billion budget plan Democrats in the Senate and Assembly are negotiating with Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) for the fiscal year that starts July 1. Lawmakers must approve the main budget package by June 15, but details of the union dues tax credit may be included in a companion bill to be enacted later this summer.
