Charter Stuck With $7.85 Million New York Tax Bill After Appeal

Charter Communications Inc. and a group of affiliated companies aren’t entitled to New York’s lower corporation franchise tax rate for “qualified emerging technology companies,” a state tribunal ruled in an opinion released Thursday.

Charter, formerly known as Time Warner Cable, appealed a 2022 administrative law judge’s ruling that it owes an additional $5.99 million in tax and $1.86 million in interest for tax years 2012 to 2014. If Charter had prevailed, its total tax bill for those years would have been under $200,000.
