Multistate corporations would file a single tax return in Maryland, much as they do in more than half of the states, if lawmakers decide to pass legislation that’s become a perennial topic of debate.
Proponents of the move express frustration that big companies can escape taxes in the state by designing affiliate transactions to their advantage and filing a separate return for each related corporate entity. Business interests, on the other hand, say having to file a combined return for all the affiliates is too complex and risky, and would harm Maryland’s competitive position.
