Expedia, Airbnb Must Collect Virginia Sales, Lodging Taxes (1)

Services like Expedia Inc. and Airbnb Inc. that broker hotel rooms and short-term rentals will have to collect and remit sales and lodging taxes to the Virginia Department of Taxation under a law that takes effect Oct. 1.

The department issued guidelines under H.B. 518/S.B. 651, a new law adjusting the way sales and transient occupancy taxes are applied to transactions facilitated by “accommodations intermediaries,” which include online hotel services and vacation rental platforms.
