Florida Senate and House at Stalemate Over Tax-Cutting Plans

Florida’s Legislature will miss its adjournment deadline next week, forcing lawmakers into an overtime or special session to address competing tax-cutting proposals that must be added to the fiscal 2026 budget.

State Senate President Ben Albritton (R) sent his caucus home late Thursday, saying that budget negotiations had stalled and wouldn’t be resolved in time for lawmakers’ scheduled May 2 adjournment deadline. The Senate and House remain far apart on their tax relief strategies, he said, adding he is personally “uncomfortable” with the House plan that won approval Friday, which would permanently slash the sales tax rate by 0.75%. ...
