Georgia Authorizes Chatham County Homestead Property Tax Exemption

The Georgia Governor signed a law authorizing a homestead exemption from Chatham County school district ad valorem taxes for educational purposes, subject to voter approval. The exemption would be equal to the amount by which the current year’s assessed home value exceeds the adjusted base year value. If approved by voters, the homestead exemption would apply on and after Jan. 1, 2026. The law took effect on May 9. [H.B. 782, enacted 05/09/25]
