Illinois Credits Online Sellers for Double-Collection Tax Glitch

Illinois lawmakers passed legislation fixing a glitch in the tax code that permitted some sales transactions conducted over online marketplaces such as Amazon.com, Wayfair and Etsy to be taxed twice.

The General Assembly passed S.B. 2066, which grants the Illinois Department of Revenue authority to grant retroactive credits to some retailers selling goods over marketplace facilitators if they were double taxed during 2020. The bill was supported by the department and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association. S.B. 2066 won unanimous approval in the House Sunday and the Senate April 21.
