Illinois DOR Issues General Information Letter on Use Tax

Nov. 12, 2024, 2:38 PM UTC

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) Sept. 4 issued a general information letter providing guidance on the state’s Use Tax. The letter clarifies that if an Illinois purchaser has properly paid tax at a rate of 6.25 percent or greater in another state for the sale, purchase, or use of property, no additional Use Tax is owed to Illinois. However, if the purchases occur outside of Illinois, purchasers must self-assess their Use Tax liability and remit payments directly to the IDOR. [Ill.
