Illinois DOR Publishes Reciprocal, Non-Reciprocal Vehicle Excise Tax Rate Chart

The Illinois Department of Revenue (DOR) Dec. 1 published the reciprocal and non-reciprocal vehicle tax rate chart for excise tax purposes. The chart lists each state and their corresponding tax liability and rates. The DOR informed taxpayers that: 1) nonresidents can’t claim the nonresident purchaser exemption on purchases of motor vehicles or trailers if they are titled in a state that doesn’t give Illinois residents a nonresident purchaser exemption; and 2) motor vehicles leased to nonresidents using drive-away permits or transferring out-of-state vehicle registration plates are exempt from taxes, regardless of the purchaser’s state of residence.
