Illinois on Track to Reach $240 Million Tax Amnesty Target

Illinois’s six-week tax amnesty program finished on Monday, but preliminary collection totals suggest the state could outstrip its initial revenue estimate of $240 million, the state’s top tax official said.

Department of Revenue director David Harris said the state had collected $180 million from 32,000 individuals and 1,900 businesses under the general tax amnesty program as of late last week. But he predicted Illinois would meet or exceed the $240 million projection because delinquent taxpayers tend to crowd into such programs at the last minute and final collections take time to process.
