Illinois Passes $56 Billion Budget as Bears Deal Stalled (1)

Illinois legislators early Monday morning passed a nearly $56 billion budget for the fiscal year starting July 1, aiming to ease higher health-care and housing costs while bracing for potential federal funding cuts.

The spending plan for fiscal 2027 includes most of the items second-term Illinois Governor JB Pritzker laid out in a February proposal. The Democratic billionaire governor has said his administration and the Democrat-controlled state legislature are focused on affordability to counter federal decisions that are driving up prices and economic uncertainty.
