Iowa Governor Offers Plan to Curb State’s Rising Property Taxes

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds unveiled a proposal to stem rising property taxes, which she said have increased more than 10% over the past two years in the state.

The plan—offered during Reynolds’ Condition of the State address Tuesday evening—would cap overall revenue growth for local governments at 2% per year, limiting the amount they could raise through property taxes. It would also move property tax assessments to every three years instead of every two.

The revenue growth limit would save Iowa taxpayers $3 billion over six years, Reynolds’ office estimated.
