IRS criminal investigation division agents are helping with President Donald Trump’s bid to federalize the police force in Washington.
Guy Ficco, IRS-CI chief, said in an interview that special agents are aiding the administration’s efforts but declined to provide details on their help. Trump took over policing in the national capital earlier this month and brought in about 2,000 National Guard troops to combat what he has cast as rampant crime.
“We’re helping,” said Ficco, who couldn’t say how many agents were part of the initiative. “We’ve been asked, and we are supplying agents.”
Trump signed a Monday executive order adding additional measures, including instructing the National Park Service to hire more police officers.
IRS-CI has about 2,200 special agents who typically investigate tax-related financial crimes but also partner with other agencies for terrorism, narcotics, and other cases.
