The IRS will furlough nearly half of its workforce as the federal government shutdown goes on longer than five business days, according to its contingency plan updated Wednesday.
About 39,870 employees critical to the agency’s operations will keep working as lawmakers fail to hammer out a deal to fund the government. Those working on the huge tax law implementation, filing season, and IT are among those who will stay on. Many employees in the IRS Criminal Investigation division also will continue working.
