Kansas Due for Tax Cuts as Lawmakers Pass Governor-Backed Bill

After months of partisan bickering and three gubernatorial vetoes, Kansas lawmakers finally settled on tax-cut legislation Tuesday that is acceptable to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

During a special legislative session, both the House and the Senate passed SB 1, which will cut the number of income tax brackets, lower rates, create exemptions for lower-income taxpayers, drop statewide property taxes, and repeal the tax on Social Security income. The bill also boosts the standard deduction and the personal exemption, and raises the tax credit amount for household and dependent care expenses.
