Louisiana Amends Ad Valorem Tax Procedures, Millage Rates Pending Voter Approval

June 1, 2026, 8:20 PM UTC

The Louisiana Governor signed a law amending the state’s statute relating to ad valorem taxation procedures and millage rate adjustments. The law: 1) allows taxing authorities to increase millage rates beyond constitutional base rates through a two-thirds vote; and 2) permanently reduces maximum millage rates not levied prior to the 2024 reassessment year. The law becomes effective Jan. 1, 2027, only if the related constitutional amendment in House Bill 521 is approved by voters. [H.B. 570, enacted 05/15/26]
