Maine legislators approved a bill this week that would retool the state’s income tax brackets in an effort to raise taxes on the most-wealthy residents.
The measure (H 649) reduces the number of income tax brackets to five from seven, and increases the tax rate on the top two brackets to 7.75% and 8.95%, to “bring fairness in income taxes to Maine families,” according to the bill’s title. The current top rates are 6.75% and 7.15%
