Jan. 30, 2024, 6:22 PM UTC

The Maine Revenue Services (MRS) Jan. 1 released information on new security measures to reduce tax fraud related to identity theft and fraudulent refund requests. If the MRS detects a potential fraudulent return, the MRS will mail the taxpayer an Identity Verification Request Notice to confirm that the taxpayer requested the refund. The notice instructs taxpayers to verify their identity on the Maine Tax Portal within 30 days, and refund requests will be suspended until identity verification is completed. [Me.
