Many Retailers Unaware of New Sales Tax Collection Duties

The second anniversary of the Wayfair ruling is around the corner, but many retailers remain unaware of the landmark Supreme Court decision granting states wide authority to impose tax collection duties on remote sellers.

A survey of 750 businesses selling into multiple states found that only 56% had heard of the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair ruling and its implications for sales tax collection. The survey was commissioned by the tax compliance and software company Avalara and the results were released Monday.
