Taxes on the sale of recreational cannabis in the states in which adults can legally use it raised $3.7 billion last year, an advocacy group said Wednesday.
That total, which comes amid growing acceptance to tax recreational pot among states, marked a 34% increase over 2020, the Marijuana Policy Project said. The tax haul showed that cannabis legalization and regulation “has generated billions of dollars in tax revenue, funded important services and programs at the state level, and created thousands of jobs across the country,” Toi Hutchinson, president and CEO of the group, said in a statement.
