Maryland Authorizes Student Loan Debt Tax Credit Repayment Extension

The Maryland Governor signed a law concerning the student loan debt relief tax credit program. The law includes: 1) modifying the program to provide that only unused credits not used toward repayment of eligible student loan debt within the required timeframe, including extensions, must be recaptured; 2) authorizing the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to grant an extension of the period within which an individual must use the credit for repayment of eligible student loan debt under certain circumstances; and 3) providing that the MHEC must adopt procedures by which an individual may apply for such a waiver.
