The Maryland Governor May 8 signed a law authorizing the governing body of Charles County to grant a property tax credit for real property owned and occupied by a volunteer emergency responder as a residence. The law includes measures: 1) defining “emergency responder;" 2) allowing the credit for both volunteer emergency responders or their unmarried surviving spouses, if deceased; 3) specifying that the federal adjusted gross income of the responder or their surviving unmarried spouse for the immediately preceding year not exceed $150,000; and 4) authorizing the county to enact a statute specifying the credit’s duration and further qualifying criteria. ...
