Michigan Governor Pledges Property and Sales Tax Relief in 2027

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) will propose a new property tax refund program for senior citizens and a sales tax holiday on back-to-school shopping during her budget address later this week.

The Whitmer administration on Monday released early details of the governor’s Saving Michiganders Money Plan, which will be highlighted in the governor’s fiscal year 2027 executive budget. The plan will provide $90 million in property tax relief annually to approximately 260,000 senior citizens.

Whitmer also proposed a first-ever sales tax holiday on school supplies, including in-person and on-line purchases of clothing, classroom items and computers. The governor, who is ...
