Michigan Governor to Propose New $5,000 Caregiver Tax Credit

Michigan taxpayers providing care to family members with long-term medical conditions would be able to claim a $5,000 tax credit against their state income taxes under a plan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will present during her state of the state address Wednesday.

Whitmer, a second-term Democrat, will call on lawmakers to enact her “Caring for MI Family Tax Credit,” aimed at reducing financial burdens for caregivers assisting aging family members and children living with disabilities. The proposed tax credit is designed to help families cover expenses for counseling, transportation, and nursing or respite services, a Whitmer administration spokesperson said.
