Michigan Tax Tribunal Issues Information on Recent Changes to Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption

The Michigan Tax Tribunal Oct. 30 issued information on recent changes to the disabled veterans property tax exemption. The Governor signed legislation expanding the exemption to include property acquired by disabled veterans’ spouses after the disabled veteran’s death. The information includes that: 1) the Michigan Compiled Laws were amended to state that the exemption continues as long as the surviving spouse doesn’t remarry; 2) the exemption applies to any property used and owned as a homestead by the surviving spouse, including homestead property acquired after the disabled veteran’s death; 3) the new law overturns the Court of Appeals’ decision in ...
