Mini Golf, Go-Kart Tax Plan Draws Opposition From NJ Lawmakers

New Jersey lawmakers said Tuesday they won’t support a plan by Gov. Phil Murphy (D) to raise new revenue by taxing participatory sports like mini golf and go-kart racing.

Murphy’s $58.1 billion state budget plan, issued Feb. 25, would raise more than $1 billion in funding through new taxes and fees—including by expanding the sales tax base to cover a wide range of sports facilities.

Under Murphy’s proposal, the state’s 6.625% sales tax rate would apply to bowling alleys, bungee jumping, batting cages, parachute jumping, and paintball, Thomas Koenig, the legislative budget and finance officer at the state Office ...
