Mississippi Governor Calls for End to State Income Tax by 2029

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves is proposing again to eliminate the state income tax.

The Republican governor offered the proposal as part of his budget plan for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1. It would go further than legislation enacted in 2022 that cuts the tax from 5% to 4% by 2026.

  • Reeves is asking lawmakers to reduce the tax from 4% to 3% immediately, then cut it to 2% in 2027 and 1% in 2028 before eliminating it completely.
