New Mexico Legislature Approves Coronavirus Tax Relief

New Mexico would temporarily waive penalties and interest for tax liabilities under legislation passed Saturday to help taxpayers cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

The measure (H.B. 6) includes several provisions aimed at offering tax relief to residents and businesses. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) asked lawmakers to address the impacts of Covid-19 on people struggling to make tax payments during her call for a special legislative session that started June 18.

The bill passed the state Senate unanimously after 69-1 approval in the House. It would take effect immediately upon the governor’s signature.
